Some Like It Hot
Some Like It Hot seems on paper as though it shouldn't really work, there's just too much in it, gangsters, romance, cross dressing, farce, songs, the various strands that make up the film are woven together so well by director Billy Wilder that this is often hailed as one of the greatest films of all time.
It was released in 1959 and due to issues with how the two main characters' make-up looked was released in black and white. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon together with Wilder's directing bring out the better of Marilyn Monroe's screen performances.
Whilst Jack Lemmon and Billy Wilder received Oscar nominations, the movie itself did not and it was overshadowed by the multi award winning Ben Hur at the 1960 Academy Awards. Ben Hur wasn't as funny.
Apart from being the sum of all its parts (this is exhaustive research folks!) the film has probably the most well known closing line of all time, delivered by the fabulous Joe E. Brown, "well, nobody's perfect". If you haven't seen this great film, go see it, I will tempt you some more with the movie trailer.
