Taxi
Taxi had so many firsts, but for me it holds one of the most grotesque sitcom characters of all time, Louie De Palma, played brilliantly by Danny De Vito. He was underhand, deceitful, repulsive, and above all funny.
Taxi was a 'gang' sitcom focusing on the workers at a New York taxi company. Largely set in the garage depot, the ensemble were the drivers, the boss and the mechanic. The mechanic, Latka Gravas was played by Andy Kaufman, most of the cast reunited to play themselves in the film Man On The Moon, where Jim Carrey portrayed Kauffman in his somewhat fictionalised life story.
The series ran for 5 seasons from 1978-1983, 114 episodes. As well as being a springboard for many of its stars including Christopher Lloyd, Marilu Henner, Judd Hirsch, Tony Danza et al, the series also led to other successful US sitcoms.
James Burrows who directed 75 episodes along with episode producers and writers, brothers Glen & Les Charles went on to create Cheers and then Frasier.
Glenn Caron who also wrote on the show went on to create Moonlighting. Another writer Sam Simon helped with the creation of The Simpsons.
A story about a possible Taxi reunion movie seems to have been circulating, but looks more like a case of someone asking Danny DeVito if he thought that some day it may seem like it might possibly be almost a good idea, rather than anyone actually doing anything about it.
Anyway the theme to Taxi seemed to wrong foot the audience from the very start, "Angela" was not originally meant to be the theme, but incidental music to an episode involving Alex and an overweight female called Angela, anyway here is the Bob James penned theme, followed by a Kaufman/DeVito quick scene.
